IN CELEBRATION OF THE KOREA GARDEN OPENINGThe 1st Annual American University Presidential Taekwondo CupDear Grand Masters, Masters, Instructors, Athletes, and Parents:It is great honor for me to invite you to the The First Annual American University Presidential Taekwondo Cup, to be held on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the university’s Bender Arena. My name is Dongil Kim, co-founder of the Taekwondo Outreach Foundation. The First Annual American University Presidential Taekwondo Cup is to celebrate the opening of the university’s new Korea Garden. On April 8, 1943, Korea’s first president, Syngman Rhee, American University President Paul Douglas, and fellow members of the Korea America Society together planted Korean cherry trees from Jeju Island on the American University campus. This planting represented a wish for Korea’s independence and freedom. In April of this year, American University celebrated the opening of the Korea Garden at its new School of International Service building. The garden, centered on the Korean cherry trees planted 68 years ago, will contain a variety of native Korean trees, flowers, and wild plants. It is the first such public Korean-style garden in the United States, and will exist as a symbol of the enduring friendship between our two countries. In celebration of this momentous occasion and international friendship, we are pleased to invite Taekwondo practitioners and their families to The First Annual American University Presidential Taekwondo Cup. There will be six main competition categories: Taeguk Poomsae, other Poomsae, Taekwondo aerobics, high and long jump breaking, power breaking, and a demonstration team competition. Additionally, the day-long program will include Korean cultural performances and activities for families and friends to enjoy.By participating in this tournament, you will be supporting the further development of the American University Korea Garden, to which proceeds will be donated. Please lend us your support in helping to make the Korea Garden a catalyst of Korean culture in Washington, D.C., and join us for an exciting day of Taekwondo competition. We hope to see you there.Sincerely yours,Master Dong Il KimCo-founder of the Taekwondo Outreach Foundation
