It is surprised to feel the hit of Taekwondo in Egypt where still have the ancient civilization. 이집트는 아프리카 대륙은 물론 세계에서도 그 실력을 인정받은 태권도 강국이라 할 수 있다. 올림픽, 세계선수권대회, 아프리칸 게임, 월드컵 등 각종 국제대회에 줄곧 상위권에 좋은 성적을 거두고 있기 때문이다. 이에 이집트올림픽위원회는 태권도를 올림픽 전략종목으로 지정하고 대표팀 훈련 및 관리에 적극 지원하고 있다. Egypt can be a strong country for Taekwondo in the Continent of Africa and the world. They have had a good result in every kind of international competitions, Olympics, World Taekwondo Championships, Africa Games and World Cup. So the Egypt Olympic committee assigned the Taekwondo to strategy sport for the Olympics and support for the national team training and management.

최근에는 겨루기부문에 이어 품새부문에서도 크게 두각을 나타내고 있다. 지난해 12월 터키에서 열린 ‘제3회 WTF 세계태권도품새선수권대회’에서 우수한 기량을 뽐내며 좋은 성적을 냈다. 이집트태권도협회(회장 호쌈 모르시)는 품새 실력 향상을 위해 국가대표팀(감독 정기영)을 별도로 구성해 지원하고 있다. 또한 품새 활성화를 위해 각종 대회 개최와 국제대회 유치에 적극적이다. 오는 연말 ‘제2회 아프리카태권도품새선수권대회’를 개최하고, 내년에 열릴 ‘제4회 세계품새선수권대회’ 유치를 계획 중인 것으로 알려지고 있다.

Recently, they had good result in the Poomsae part following the Sparring part. They had a good result at ‘The 3rd WTF world Taekwondo Poomsae Championships’ in Turkey on December 2008. The Egypt Taekwondo Association supports to advance the Poomsae ability for Poomsae national team (director Mr. Jeong Gi-Young). Also they are positive to hold every kind of competitions and international games for Poomsae revitalization. They are going to hold ‘The 2nd Africa Taekwondo Poomsae Championship’ at the end of this year and plan to hold ‘the 4th World Poomsae Championship’ next year.

이집트 태권도 수련인구는 현재 약 8만여 명으로 추산하고 있다. 90년대 중반 이집트 체육청이 쿵푸를 가맹종목에서 제외시키자 쿵푸 지도자 및 수련생이 대거 태권도로 전향한 사례가 있다. 이때 태권도 수련생이 약 15만 명까지 늘었던 적이 있었다고 한 현지 관계자는 전했다. The amount of Taekwondo practitioners in Egypt is about 80 thousand. Many Kung Fu instructors and practitioners turned to Taekwondo when the Egypt Office of sports ruled out Kung Fu from the joining sports. An officer said that the Taekwondo practitioners were almost 150 thousand at that time.태권도는 수도 카이로를 비롯해 알렉산드리아, 탄타, 포트사이드, 이스마일리아 등 수도권에 집중 보급되어 있다. 반면, 중부이남 지역으로는 태권도 수련인구가 1천명 미만으로 수도권과 보급에 큰 차이를 나타내고 있다. 2006년부터 아스완을 중심으로 룩소르, 케나, 수에그 등 상이집트에 태권도 보급이 활성화되고 있다. 하지만 여전히 지역적으로 태권도에 대한 인지도가 부족한 까닭에 수련환경과 지도자가 부족해 보급이 탄력을 받지 못하고 있다.

Taekwondo was centralized in the Metropolitan area, Alexandria, Tanta, Port Said and Ismailia including the capital, Cairo. On the other side, the population of Taekwondo practitioners in the Middle-South Area is less than one thousand so it is a big difference with the Metropolitan area. It is revitalized the Taekwondo spreading in Upper Egypt, Aswan, Luxor, Kenya and Sueg. But still it has low recognition for the Taekwondo in the area so the practice place and the instructors are lacks to spread.

태권도 승급심사는 클럽별 또는 지역별로 정기적으로 실시한다. 승급심사는 협회 주관으로 감독관이 파견돼 이뤄진다. 기본동작, 품새, 발차기, 겨루기 등 부문별 종합점수를 매겨 승급여부를 결정한다. 국기원 승단심사는 지역과 상관없이 협회가 정한 곳에서 강도 높게 이뤄진다.

The Taekwondo promotion test takes effect by classified a club and area regularly. The promotion test is held by an association who send out a superintendent. It decided the success or failure by the total points on basic movement, poomsae, kicking and sparring. Kukkiwon Poom and Dan promotion test is intensive to operate at the place where the association decided.

이집트 태권도 보급은 대부분 정부 및 민간이 운영하는 스포츠클럽을 통해 이뤄진다. 태권도 전용 도장은 보기 드물다. 주 3회 주기로 1시간 30분 정도 수련한다. 학기 중에는 방학기간보다 수련인구가 줄어든다. 때문에 수도권 일부 대형 클럽에서는 방학기간 태권도 특별프로그램을 개설하기도 한다. 공항 근처에 위치한 샴스클럽에는 태권도 전용 훈련장이 있다. 웬만한 대회는 이곳에서 개최할 정도로 규모가 크다. 대표팀 훈련은 올림픽선수촌에 별도로 마련되어 있다.

The most Egypt Taekwondo spreading is accomplished through the government and private sports clubs. It is difficult to see the Taekwondo Dojang. They are training three days a week and one and half hour. The practitioners are less during the school term than the vacation term. So some big clubs open the Taekwondo special program during the vacations. The Shams club nearby the Airport has a Taekwondo training room. This place is big enough to hold the possible competitions. The national team has their own training room at an Olympic village.

우리나라와 이집트 두 나라의 외교 및 체육 관계에서도 태권도는 빼놓을 수 없다. 주이집트대사관은 양국의 우호관계를 위해 이집트태권도협회와 매년 ‘주이집트태권도대사배태권도대회’를 개최하고 있다.

Taekwondo is important for the diplomacy and sports relation between Korea and Egypt. Stationed Egypt ambassador is holding the ‘Egypt Taekwondo Ambassador Taekwondo Championship’ with the Egypt Taekwondo Association every year for friendly relations. 1974년 아랍어 공부를 위해 이집트로 유학을 갔던 노승옥 사범은 1978년까지 개인자격으로 이집트에 처음 태권도를 보급하게 된다. 이 계기로 이집트는 1978년 태권도협회를 구성하고, 이듬해 세계태권도연맹(WTF)에 가입하게 되었다.

Master No Song-Ok went to Egypt to study the Arabic language in 1974 and spread Taekwondo in the first time until 1978 individually. Egypt started their Taekwondo association on 1978 and joined the WTF the next year.

이후 우리나라 정부에서 정식으로 태권도 사범을 파견하기 시작했다. 초대 정부파견 태권도 사범은 김승주 사범이다. 1979년 당시 중앙정보부에서 파견되어 1981년까지 현지에 태권도 기틀을 닦았다. 이어 정성홍 사범(안전기획부 파견)이 바통을 이어받아 1984년까지 지도했다.

The Korean government dispatched Taekwondo instructors formally after that. The first government dispatching Taekwondo instructor was Master. Kim Seoung-Ju. He made the base of Taekwondo there from 1979 to 1981. Master Jeong Sung-Ho was dispatched after him until 1984.84년과 86년 외무부 소속(1991년 한국국제협력단 소속으로 전환)으로 파견된 정기영 사범과 임한수 사범은 현재까지 이집트에서 태권도를 보급하고 있다. 정기영 사범은 1998년 임기 종료 이후에도 대표팀 육성과 개인도장을 통해 현지 태권도 보급을 이어가는 중이다. 임한수 사범은 2007년 임기종료 후 코이카 시니어 봉사단원으로 다시 이집트로 돌아가 태권도를 통한 사랑과 나눔을 실천하고 있다.

Master Jeong Gi-Young and Master Lim Han-Su are still spreading Taekwondo in Egypt from 1984 and 1986. Master Jeong Gi-Young continued to spread Taekwondo by training the national team and owns the Dojang after his term of office in 1998. [인물] 이집트에 23년간 태권도를 보급한 임한수 사범Master Lim Han-Su has been spreading Taekwondo for 23 years in Egypt.- 정파사범 임기종료 후에도 봉사단원으로 활동계속He continues the activity as a Corpsman after finished his dispatched term of office우리나라 정부파견 태권도사범으로 지난 1986년부터 이집트에 태권도를 보급한 임한수 사범(52)이 24년째 활동을 멈추지 않고 있다. 한반도 다섯 배가 넘는 이집트 곳곳에 태권도가 보급되려면 아직 멀었다는 이유에서다. 그래서 아직도 매주 지방 곳곳을 돌며 지도자 보수교육 및 신규 보급에 열성이다.

Master Lim Han-Su (52) still not stops his activity in Egypt who was the government dispatched Taekwondo instructor from 1986. Because he thinks it is a long way to spread Taekwondo in Egypt that is five times bigger than Korea. So he still is working hard for instructor maintenance education and spreading here and there every week.

임한수 사범은 1986년 당시 외무부를 통해 이집트에 태권도사범으로 파견됐다. 1991년부터는 한국국제협력단(KOICA) 소속으로 전환돼 활동을 계속했다. 그렇게 22년을 활동하다 2007년 연령제한으로 정년퇴직했다. 신체 어느 곳 하나 아픈 곳이 없고, 직접 시범을 보이면서 지도하는데 어려움이 없는데 규정상 정년퇴직을 하게 된 것이다. 한국으로 돌아갈까도 셀 수 없이 생각을 반복했다. 그러나 그는 이집트를 떠나지 않았다. 22년간 정신없이 활동했음에도 이집트 내에 태권도 보급이 다 끝나지 않았기 때문이다.

Master Lim Han-Su was dispatched to Egypt by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986. He was continued the activity by KOICA from 1991. He was active for 22 years like that and then he retired by the age limit in 2007. He was healthy and had no problem to train but he had to retire by the age limit. He thought a lot for return to Korea. But he didn’t leave Egypt.

그래서 그는 한국으로 돌아와 코이카 해외봉사단 시니어단원으로 다시 이집트로 떠났다. 태권도를 통한 봉사활동을 하면서 그의 제2의 인생이 시작된 것이다. 그는 좋고 편한 업무를 놓고 자청해 일선 클럽 수련생 지도와 지역별 순회 지도자교육을 매주 실시하고 있다. 임 사범은 “지방에 가면 도복도 없이 수련하는 수련생이 많다”며 “그때마다 내가 입고 갔던 도복이며, 신발(태권도화)을 벗어주고 온 적이 한 두 번이 아니다”고 말한다.

So he went back to Korea and returned to Egypt as a KOICA oversea Corpsman senior member. It was the second life for him by the volunteer activity with Taekwondo. He has trained Taekwondo and educated instructors at the club every week instead of a comfortable job. Master Lim said, “There are many practitioners training without Dobok in the country” and, “when I visited them, I had to give my Dobok and Taekwondo shoes away”

임한수 사범은 1986년부터 1995년까지 이집트 성인 및 청소년 남녀 국가대표팀을 이끌었다. 부임 첫 해 미국 캘리포티아에서 열린 제1회 세계대학선수권대회에서 금메달 1개와 은메달 1개를 획득하면서 종합 3위를 달성했다. 아랍권과 아프리카 선수권대회에서는 전 체급을 휩쓸 정도의 최강실력을 과시했다. ‘88 서울 올림픽(시범종목)’에서 은 1개(종합5위), ‘92 바르셀로나올림픽(시범종목)’에 동 2개(12위)를 각각 획득한 바 있다.

Master Lim Han-Su was the director of Egypt senior and junior national team from 1986 to 1995. He went to the 1st World University Championship in California, America and had the 3rd place with one gold medal and one silver medal at the first year for him. He has shown the strong ability by winning all weight classes at competitions of Arabic and Africa. He has had one silver medal (total 5th place) in ‘Seoul Olympic 1988’ and two bronze medals (12th place) in ‘Barcelona Olympic

1992’대표팀 양성에 바쁜 와중에도 그는 주재국 태권도 근간이 되는 클럽순회 지도를 빼놓지 않고 열심히 지도했다. 또한 태권도 승급심사 및 승단심사와 각종 개최되는 시합을 관리감독 했다.

He has been educated training at the clubs even though he was busy to train the national team. Also he had managed and directed Taekwondo promotion tests and all kind of competitions.

그는 95년 대표팀 감독직을 그만두고 국립경찰대학으로 자리를 옮겼다. 이 때 전 학년의 필수과목으로 태권도를 채택될 수 있도록 했다. 이렇게 2002년까지 7년 동안 경찰대생과 경찰간부 등 1만3천여 명에게 태권도를 지도했다. 특히 그에게 태권도를 배운 학생들은 졸업 후 각 지역 경찰서 등에 간부로 부임해 태권도 보급 활성화를 도모했다.

He quit as the director of the national team in 1995 and moved to the national police academy. At that time, he made Taekwondo to be a required subject for all classes. Then he trained Taekwondo to 13 thousand police academy students and the executives for seven years. Especially his students were planning to revitalize the Taekwondo spread as the executive of local police stations after graduation.

그는 단순히 태권도 지도만 하지 않았다. 수련생들과 학부모 등에게 한국의 차량 및 전자제품, 의류 등 각종 제품에 대하여 높이 평가하는 간접적인 홍보활동을 지속적으로 했다. 이를 통해 우리나라 기업들의 교역 및 투자와 자원시장이 활성화되는데 작은 힘을 보탰다. 이런 작은 활동으로 그가 첫 이집트에 파견된 당시와 비교해 지금은 주재국내에서 한국에 대한 인지도와 이미지는 크게 달라졌다.

He has only trained Taekwondo. He was informed the Korean products, car, electronic products and clothes to practitioner and their parents indirectly. So it added a small energy to revitalize exchange business, investment and resource market of Korean companies. These small activities changed the image and acknowledge of Korea in Egypt.

그는 “이집트 중부와 남부지방에는 아직도 태권도 보급이 안 된 곳이 많다”며 “이집트 곳곳까지 태권도가 보급될 수 있도록 여력을 다할 것이다”고 앞으로의 계획을 말했다.

He said about the plan for the future, “There are many places to spread Taekwondo in middle and south of Egypt still” and, “I will try hard to spread Taekwondo everywhere in Egypt”
