온두라스 대통령 한영 만찬 주최; 로보 대통령 태권도에 대한 각별한 애정

온두라스 대통령 내외가 20일 방한해 세계태권도연맹(WTF)이 마련한 환영만찬에 참석, 태권도 단증을 보여주는 등 태권도에 대한 각별한 애정을 보여주었다. 세계태권도연맹(총재 조정원, WTF)은 20일 저녁 서울 강남에 위치한 라마다 르네상스 호텔에서 온두라스 포르피리오 로보 소사 대통령(Porfirio Lobo Sosa, 64) 내외 방한을 환영하는 만찬을 열었다. 이날 행사에는 온두라스 대통령 내외, 온두라스 국회 의장 내외, 주한 온두라스 대사 내외, 조정원 총재 내외, 태권도진흥재단 이대순 이사장, WTF 임직원 등 약 100명이 참석했다. 태권도 단체에서 국가 원수를 단독 초청해 만찬을 연 것은 처음 있는 일이다. 로보 온두라스 대통령은 국기원 공인 3단의 유단자로 지난 1986년부터 26년째 태권도를 수련을 해왔다. 때문에 태권도에 대한 각별한 애정을 가지고 있어 이번 방한 중 WTF 환영 만찬에도 참석하게 된 것이다.

조정원 총재는 “대통령 당신이야 말로 태권도를 통해서 인생에 교훈을 얻어 무엇을 이룰 수 있는지를 보여주는 귀감이 되고 있다”며 “온두라스와 전 세계 태권도 발전을 위해 지속적인 관심과 지원을 부탁드린다”고 환영사에서 밝혔다. 로보 대통령은 답사를 통해 태권도에 대한 각별한 애정을 나타냈다. 현재 대통령직에 오르고 흔들리지 않은 국정 운영을 하는데, ‘태권도 정신’이 있어 가능했다고 소개했다. 태권도를 처음 시작한 일화를 전하면서, 자신에게 태권도를 엄격하게 지도해준 송봉경 사범에 대해 이야기 했다. 로보 대통령은 “태권도는 규율과 사람에 대한 태도, 예절에 대한 가르침을 주고 있다. 나는 매일 경호원과 태권도 연습을 하고 있다”며 “태권도를 통해 대통령으로서 잘못된 길을 가지 않도록 하고 있다. 그래서 태권도에 깊은 애정을 갖고 있으며, 태권도에 큰 빚을 지고 있다”고 말했다.

로보 대통령은 태권도 교관으로 온두라스에 파견된 송봉경 사범(2008년 작고)에게 86년부터 태권도를 직접 배웠다. 매일 아침 5시부터 송봉경 체육관(Song"s Gym)에서 태권도 수련으로 하루 일과를 시작했다. 로보 대통령은 “송 사범으로부터 규율, 용기, 인내를 배웠다”고 깊은 존경심을 나타냈다. 송봉경 사범과 관련하여 "송 사범님은 돌아가셨지만, 그러나 그의 태권도 가르침은 아직 남아있다"고 말했다. 행사장에 참석한 주한 온두라스 대사에 대해서도 "송 사범님 밑에서 같이 태권도를 배웠다. 현재는 사범님의 딸을 부인으로 맞아 훌륭한 태권도 가족을 이루고 있다"고 소개했다. 특히 조정원 총재의 환영사에 이어 로보 대통령은 답사 직전 송봉경 사범 부인에게 다가가 허리를 숙여 인사를 해서 눈길을 끌었다.

송봉경 사범과 관련하여 "송 사범님은 돌아가셨지만, 그러나 그의 태권도 가르침은 아직 남아있다"고 말했다. 행사장에 참석한 주한 온두라스 대사에 대해서도 "송 사범님 밑에서 같이 태권도를 배웠다. 현재는 사범님의 딸을 부인으로 맞아 훌륭한 태권도 가족을 이루고 있다"고 소개했다. 특히 조정원 총재의 환영사에 이어 로보 대통령은 답사 직전 송봉경 사범 부인에게 다가가 허리를 숙여 인사를 해서 눈길을 끌었다. 축사 및 답사에 이어 조정원 총재는 로보 대통령에게 ‘태권도 발차기 조각상’을 선물로 주었으며, 로보 대통령도 선물을 전달했다. 만찬에 이어 세계태권도연맹 시범단의 시범이 열려, 참석자들로부터 큰 박수를 받았다.로보 대통령은 2004년 온두라스 국회의장 시절 자신에게 태권도를 지도한 송봉경 사범을 온두라스 사회에 기여한 공을 인정, 외국인에게는 최초로 국회 훈장(Congressional Gold Medal)을 수여했다. 온두라스에서 태권도는 최고의 인기 스포츠인 것으로 알려졌다. 인구 800만 명 중 1만 명이 수련한고 있다. 점차 태권도를 좋아하는 젊은이들이 늘어나고 있는 추세다. 온두라스 정부는 올해 세계태권도평화봉사단을 초청한 상태다. 한편, 로보 대통령은 21일 청와대 오찬에 참석해 오찬 직후 조정원 세계태권도연맹 총재로부터 WTF 명예 9단증과 이명박 대통령으로부터 태권도복을 수여 받았다. <세계연맹제공>

WTF President Chungwon Choue hosted a welcoming dinner for visiting Honduran President H. E. Porfirio Lobo Sosa at the Renaissance Seoul Hotel in Seoul, Korea on Feb. 20, 2011. At the welcoming dinner, Honduran President Lobo, a 3rd Dan Kukkiwon black-belt holder, showed his ‘special’ love for taekwondo even by showing off his Dan certificate to the participants. Honduran President, 64, Lobo arrived in Seoul on Feb. 20 for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Korean President Lee Myung-bak. “I started practicing taekwondo in 1986 under Korean Grandmaster Song Bong-kyung,” Honduran President Lobo said in his speech at the dinner, which drew about 100 dignitaries from Korea and Honduras. Grandmaster Song, who is known as the father of taekwondo in Honduras and passed away in 2008, went to Honduras in 1975 to teach taekwondo for the military and police officials. “I have learned discipline, courage and perseverance through the teachings of Grandmaster Song and that is why I have a special love for taekwondo and I owe too much to taekwondo,” he said. The Honduran President said, “I am asking our Honduran youngsters to practice taekwondo as it gives taekwondo practitioners peace of mind, among others.” The President also said that he practiced taekwondo together with the Honduran Ambassador to Korea, Michel Idiaquez Baradat, under Grandmaster Song. The ambassador married the daughter of Grandmaster Song, Evette Song Kang, in 2002. With an overall population of about 8 million, Honduras has some 10,000 taekwondo practitioners and taekwondo is the most practiced martial art-turned sport. In his welcoming speech, WTF President Choue spoke well of the Honduran President. “It is a great privilege for the WTF to be hosting you this evening. Our shared love for the art and sport of taekwondo has established an already unique relationship,” WTF President Choue said. “Tonight, it is my wish that this relationship will grow further.” “As the leader of a nation, there are undoubtedly great challenges faced on the daily basis,” Choue said. “I’m certain that the training that you received from Grandmaster Song Bong-kyung has benefited you to meet those challenges head-on with courage and perseverance.” WTF President Choue continued to say, “It is clear that Honduras is now in good hands under your leadership. Truly, if any country is to succeed, they need a taekwondo person to lead the way. Your decision to send an ambassador to Korea that is also a taekwondo man was pure genius.” “Tonight, I wish to express my deepest appreciation for your dedication and determination not only as your nation’s leader, but a member of our taekwondo family,” Choue said. “Your Excellency, you are a true testament to how taekwondo can enrich the lives of its practitioners. You are a model for what can be achieved through the life lessons that taekwondo can provide.” “The growing population of taekwondo in Honduras and the rest of the world is solidifying its position as an Olympic sport,” WTF President Choue said. After the speeches, WTF President Choue delivered a taekwondo statute as a gift to Honduran President Lobo and vice versa. The WTF Taekwondo Demonstration Team showed off its taekwondo skills for the dinner participants, drawing big applause. Honduran President Lobo is scheduled to receive an honorary 9th WTF Dan certificate from WTF President Choue and a taekwondo uniform from Korean President Lee Myung-bak in a ceremony shortly after a luncheon at Cheong Wa Dae on Feb. 21.
