“The educational aims are to cultivate students to become patriots full of nationalism and to become global minded individuals proficient in foreign language skills, academic ability, and health. We want them to have sound bodies and minds and actively and cooperatively participate in volunteer works.
국제고등학교 설립자 최 병 체 선생은 한의학 침구학을 공부하여 인술을 베풀고 민족해방과 인재양성에 뜻을 두고 해방 후 다시는 외부로부터 침략을 받지 않아야 한다는 일념으로 이충무공 정신을 계승하고 조국통일과 민족적 번영을 위한 선구자적 인재를 육성하기 위하여 1967년 10월 15일 전남여상고을, 1985년 11월 7일 전남외국어학교를, 1989년 9월 21일 국제고등학교를 설립했다.
The school’s founder, the late Byong-chae Choi, studied oriental medicine and acupuncture. While working as an oriental medicine practitioner as well as an acupuncturist, he had a single-minded determination and desire to educate the knowledgeable people. Equipped with the Spirits of Admiral Yi Sun-shin for national independence, he wanted to give his countrymen a strong foundation so as not to be invaded and colonized by foreign powers again.
That is why he founded Chonnam Girls Commercial High School on October 15, 1967, Chonnam Foreign Language High School on November 17, 1985, and Kukje High School on September 21, 1989 in order to produce pioneering intellectuals imbued with the Spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin for our country’s reunification and prosperity.
광주 국제고등학교 민종기 교장은 2000년 4대 교장으로 취임하여 지난 96년부터 99년까지 4년 연속 학교경영 우수학교로 선정되면서 광주 최고의 명문 고등학교로 자리매김하고 있다.
Jong-ki, Min took office as the school’s fourth principal in 2000.
This school has been redefined as one of the most prestigious high schools in Gwangju and was selected for excellent school curriculum management four consecutive years, from 1996 – 1999, by the Gwangju Office of Education.

지난 2005년 일본 고치현 메이토쿠와 맺은 결연은 지금까지 8년 동안 이어져 오고 있으며, 지금까지 200여명이 학교 및 홈스테이를 통해 공동으로 수업활동에 참여하고 많은 문화행사를 실시했다.
Since signing into a sisterhood relationship with Meitoku High School in Kochi Prefecture, Japan in 2005, 200 Japanese students have participated in classes and homestay programs for 8 years in a row.
2011년 5월 20일~ 25일 중국 하남성 허창 고등학교와의 국제 교류 활동은 글로벌 인재를 양성하기 위한 일환으로 교류활동 이루어지고 있다. 지난해 학생, 교사 등 27명이 방문해 교류체험활동으로 기능 향상에 대한 이해를 높였다.
Kukje also has a sisterhood with Huchang High School in Hanam, China; begun on on May 20, 2011. Since then a group of 7 teachers and 27 students from Huchang High School visited Kukje High School in 2012.
국제고등학교는 또한 2011 년도 미국 루지애나 대학과 자매결연을 체결하고 2012년 7월에 2주 동안 민 종 기 교장을 포함하여 교사 2명과 11명의 학생들이 이 대학을 방문하였다. 이런 해외 문화체험의 기회들은 국제교류에 대한이해를 증진시키고 해외에서 공부함으로서 학생들에게 더 큰 꿈을 심어 주고 국제적인 마인드를 가진 사람이 될수 있도록 해주고 있다.
Kukje also established a partnership with Louisiana College in 2011 and in July 2012, two teachers, principal Mr. Min and 11 students visited Louisiana campus for two weeks. These opportunities have enhanced the understanding of cultural exchange and inspired students to dream bigger and become more global- minded people through studying abroad.
2000년부터 매년 서울대, 연 고대를 15명에서 30명까지 지난 2007년에는 광주 고등학교 중 서울대 합격을 최고로 많이 시키기도 했다. 그리고 해마다 국제고는 국립대 및 의학계열에 150여명이상 배출하는 전국 신흥 명문 사학으로서의 위상을 굳건히 하고 있다.
Since 2000, 15-30 graduates have been accepted every year to Seoul National University, Yeonsei University and Korea University in Seoul and especially in 2007, more students were accepted to Seoul National University than any other high school in Gwangju.
Every year by producing over 150 excellent graduates who are accepted to national universities and medical schools, this keeps the school’s prestige steadfast nationwide.
국제고등학교는 해마다 2회에 걸처서 춘향제와 추향제를 학생들과 봉행하여 충무공의 5대 정신인 애국애족(愛國愛族) 자주자립(自主自立) 창의창조(創意創造) 렴결무사(廉潔無私) 감전필승(敢戰必勝)을 학생들의 마음속에 심어 인생관 정립에 도움을 주고자 최선을 다한다.
Twice a year, this high school takes students for rituals at Moo gwang-sa shrine,
and makes the utmost effort to instill in students the five Spirits of Admiral, Yi Sun-shin: (1) patriotism and nationalism, (2) independence and self- reliance, (3) creativity and imagination, (4) integrity and selflessness and (5) the conviction of sure victory in any desperate war.
충무공 이순신장군을 주벽으로 임진왜란 때 구국의 횃불을 높이 드신 이 고장 출신 여섯 분의 선열 문열공 김천일, 금계 로인, 충장공 김덕령, 수은 강항, 충장공 정운, 수사 송희립의 정신을 추모하고자 무광사(武光祠)라는 사당을 1957년 9월 23일 광주시 학동에 건립하고 이들을 함께 모셔 해마다 이충무공 탄신일인 4월 28일에 춘향제를 (이날이 본교 개교기념일이 되었음), 기일인 12월 16일에는 추향제를 지낸다. 이순신 장군은 조선시대인 1592년 임진왜란동안에 13척의배로 133척의 일본 군함 대를 물리치신 위대한 영웅이시다.
The school’s founder built the shrine on September 23, 1957 in Hack-dong and since then rituals have been observed twice a year, during the Chun-hyang ceremony and Admiral Yi’s birthday on April 28, and during the Chu-hyang ceremony on December 16, Admiral Yi’s memorial Day.
All these are to honor Admiral Yi Sun-shin and six local admirals from this area, including Kim Chon-il, Noh- in, Kim Duck-lyong, Kang Han, Jeong Woon and Song Hee-rip for holding torches higher and making great contributions for victory during the Korean-Japanese War that began with Japan’s invasion of the Chosun Dynasty in 1592. Admiral Lee is a great Korean hero for defeating a fleet of 133 Japanese warships with only 13 Korean ships
그리고 다양한 교내 행사 국제예술제 축제와 함께 인터넷 홈페이지를 통하여 사이버 공부방 운영도 유명한 학교이다
Kukje is well known for cyber-study through its internet homepage and a variety of in-school events such as the “Kukje Festival.”
국제고는 또한 이웃을 위한 나눔 실천학교로도 유명하다.
지난 사랑의 열매 광주 사회 복지 공동 모금 회 와 함께 ‘LOVE SHARE 사랑을 나누는 학교’ 모금 캠페인에 동참 남·여학생 165명이 사랑의 열매에 1000원에서 3000원까지 기부하며 나눔을 실천하고 있다.
This school is also noticeable for sharing love with its neighbors.
Last year 165 students participated in a fundraising campaign with the Gwangju Society Welfare Funding Organization and donated 1000-3000 won.
국제고등학교 민종기 교장은 태권도 정규과목 도입에 대하여“우리 본교의 건학이념인 충무정신(忠武精神) 불이교의(不二敎儀) 우주동인(宇宙同人)이 본교 설립자이신 최병채 선생의 이념과 태권도 정신이 같기 때문에, 우리 학교에서는 금년부터 1학년 전 학생에게 태권도를 정규 교육과정에 넣어 가르치고 있다 ” 민 교장은 “내가 지금까지 교장을 하면서 가장 잘한 일은 1,2학년 전학생에게 태권도를 교육과정에 편성한 일이다.
As for the introduction of Taekwondo training as a part of the regular curriculum, principal Mr. Min cites our school foundational ideals which are:
(1) the Spirits of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, (2) the tenet that teaching, practicing and doing are one entity, and (3) we are one in the universe. These are the same values as spirits of Taekwondo martial arts, so we began teach this subject to all first year students from this year.
He also added that introducing Taekwondo training into the regular curriculum for first and second year students was the best decision that he has made since taking office as principal.
지금 우리나라에서 학생 인권을 무엇보다 중시하는 교육 풍토에서 학생들의 인성과 생활지도가 대단히 어려웠다.
많은 선생님들이 이렇게 생각하며 교육 현장에서 지도의 어려움을 느끼고 심지어 포기하고 있는 실정이다. 이런 상황에서 태권도 수련은 우리 학교 권학이념인 충무정신 함양에도 적절하고, 무도를 통한 절도와 예법도 익히고, 1,2학년 때 기초 체력을 보완하여 3학년 입시 준비에 도움이 될 것이며, 대학입학사정관제에도 도움이 될 것으로 생각된다.
Recently, as students’ human rights are being emphasized in our country’s educational climate, it is getting more difficult for teachers to guide students in school.
Many teachers have this opinion and are almost resigned in guiding them.
Under these circumstances, Taekwondo training is an appropriate way to cultivate good moral character and moderation and help prepare students for college entrance examinations by strengthening their bodies and minds during their first two years.
그리고 우리 국제고는 평소 인간존중과 협력을 교육방침으로 삼아서 교육적 관점에서 우리 국제고인 들의 변화나 혁신을 도모케 하는 태권도 수련은 자신과 사회에 바람직한 영향을 가져다주는 수행이며 공부(study)라는 목적으로 바람직한 자기 변화를 도모하는 건전한 사회인이 되는 것을 목표로 도입했다.”
Another reason for introducing Taekwondo into the curriculum comes from an educational perspective. As our educational policies respect personal rights and cooperation, Taekwondo training is a way for students to practice changing themselves for the better and developing themselves into healthy citizens.
“우리 국제고 태권도 프로그램은 첫째, 건학이념인 충무정신(忠武精神) 바람직한 수련 목적과 목표는 태권도 수련을 통하여 참을성, 관용, 예의 등 도덕적 태도와 정신수양(精神修養)에서 예의, 염치, 겸양, 관용 등 실천 덕목의 이행은 도덕적 실행력을 가르치는 것이다.”
“Firstly, the objectives and purposes of our school’s Taekwondo training program are to cultivate the moral attitudes of perseverance, tolerance, and etiquettes
through desirable training of Taekwondo based on the school’s educational ideals and to practice manners, courtesy, integrity, humility and generosity in the light of mental culture.
“두 번째, 우리 국제고 태권도 교육 시스템은 무엇보다 교육자적 신뢰성과 학교가 갖는 교육 장소와 수련 내용이 충실하다는 점이다. 지도자의 교육적 권위와 교육 장소인 학교의 신뢰와 교육 행위인 지도 과정에서 태권도를 배우는 학생 대다수가 지도교사를 신뢰하고 학부모님들이 태권도 교육적 역할에 이해와 동참되는 것이 중요하다.
태권도에는 풍부한 교육 요소가 엄청나게 많이 있기 때문이다”
Secondly, among other things, our school has other advantages. We have higher teacher credibility and authority, substantial subject contents and the best facilities to teach Taekwondo.
We have to define the roles that teachers should play in teaching the contents of Taekwondo. In order for students to acquire Taekwondo skills, teachers must have authority over student, the school must support teachers and parents must understand the educational role of Taekwondo as part of the instructive process.
“호신, 경기, 시범 기술 등 기술면에서의 교육 내용과 병행해서 향상되는 체력적인 면,
그리고 심리적인 능력과 도덕적 품성 등 정신면에서 교육 효과와 함께 건강, 운동, 안전 등에 관한 지식 습득 등 지적인 요소가 있다”면서 태권도 교육에 대한 열정과 함께 교육적 효과에 대하여 말한다.
He said that the educational effects of Taekwondo with the passion for teaching the arts, adding that there are intellectual elements such as the aspect of physical strength being improved with the technical aspects including self-defence, games events and demonstrating various techniques, educational benefits such as psychological ability, moral character and acquiring knowledge about health, exercise and safety.
민 교장은 셋째 건학이념인 “우주동인(宇宙同人)”으로 우리 교육에는 책보다는 부모와 친구간의 따뜻한 인간관계를 유지하는 것도 중요하다. 태권도는 우리 국제고인의 심신 발달과 정서 함양과 함께 E.Q.(정서지능), M.Q.(도덕지능) 및 I.Q.(지능지수) 발달과 함께 감정을 잘 조절하며 타인과 원만히 어울리는 사회성을 기를 수 있다. 태권도는 인성 발달에 주요한 역할을 하며 고품격의 교육으로 승화시킬 수 있다.
Principal Mr. Min expressed his thoughts about the relationship between Taekwondo training and the school’s foundational ideals. He said that, “As we are one in the universe, it is also important to keep good personal relationships with friends and family and parents rather than only text books in our education.
Taekwondo training enables us to cultivate the social skills to get on well with others by controling our emotions and developing the body and mind, emotional quotient, moral quotient and intelligence quotient. It plays an important role in developing character and can improve the quality of education.“
태권도를 통하여 인격 완성, 인간 완성, 자기완성의 사람으로 육성하겠다.”라고 태권도와 건학이념과의 연관 교육관을 피력했다.
He will try to teach students to improve themselves, overall, to become people of personality and perfection, human beings of self-perfection through Taekwondo training.
Taekwondo coach and Kukje High School Taekwondo teacher , Jae-chun Kim
(present managing director of The Korea Taekwondo Federation for secondary schools), has gained and enjoyed a reputation in the National Taekwondo Sports Festival since Kukje's Taekwondo club was created in 1990.
Some successes have been: Jong-sun Hah’s gold medal in the 73th National Taekwondo competition, Hyo-hong Lim’s gold medal in the third World Junior Championship, and the gold medals of Mi-yeoun Cho and Sae-rom Park in the National Taekwondo Sports Festival, followed by Su-mi Woo’s silver medals (working Gwangsan county office) in the National Taekwondo Sports Festival in 2006 and 2007, and silver medals in the Asia Junior Championship four consecutive times in a row.
이 같은 결과는 민 교장의 아낌없는 지원 속에서 태권도 선수들이 훈련장에서 땀으로 얻어진 것이기에 더욱 소중할 뿐만 아니라, 그동안 일반학교 같은 특기자 선수 수급이 아닌 환경 속에서도 지도자와 선수가 하나가 되어 묵묵히 땀을 흘려온 보람의 결실이다.
These exceptional results are rewarding fruits obtained through the strenuous efforts of both teachers and students with the help of the principal’s unstinting support. These wins are especially meaningful because Kukje does not recruit Taekwondo students from elementary or middle schools, rather these students come assigned to our school, neither particularly trained nor talented yet build their way to success.
이같이 다양한 특기교육은 학생들의 심신을 단련시킴으로써, 사회생활에서 필요한 단체 활동을 통한 협동심, 남을 배려하는 인성교육에 큰 밑 거름이 되고 있다.
This kind of effort has become solid bases needed to cultivate character and a sense of cooperation through teamwork necessary for social life.
